A fascinating class she took in engineering school: “Natural Disasters: Rebuilding from Ruins,” was an interdisciplinary course developed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. “It covered the natural science behind why disasters happen; the engineering that helps our society prepare for disasters; and the sociological and political issues involved.”

Advice to potential engineering students: “Don’t be daunted; don’t let anybody scare you out of trying it. You can always transfer out if you don’t like it. But, really, we’re pretty cool!”
